Lempuyang Temple

Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple is a temple located on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem, Bali. Precisely located in Tista Village, Abang District, Karangasem Regency, Bali.

The journey to the temple is approximately 88 kilometers from Ngurah Rai airport or the Kuta Beach area. Can spend approximately 2.5 hours.
Lempuyang Temple is one of the most respected temples in Bali.

Lempuyang Luhur Temple located at the top of Mount Lempuyang is one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad or “six holy places in the world”. Sad Khayangan Temple consists of: Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Lempuyang Temple, Goa Lawah Temple, Watukaru Temple, Bukit Pengalengan Temple and Besakih Temple.

Balinese people believe that the establishment of a place of prayer around Mount Lempuyang precedes most temples on the island of Bali. According to Balinese belief, this temple is an important point of this island and is believed to provide spiritual balance for Bali.

Lempuyang Temple also has several meanings. In a book published by the Bali Culture Service (1998) entitled ‘Lempuyang Luhur’, it is stated that the word Lempuyang comes from the word ‘lamp’ which means light and ‘hyang’ to refer to God, such as Hyang Widhi.

From that word lempuyang or lamp which is interpreted as a bright holy light of God. Lempuyang Temple is the palace of Hyang Gni Jaya or Dewa Iswara.

The group of temples on Mount Lempuyang is also one of the groups of temples in Bali known as Pura Kahyangan Padma Bhuwana. Each of these temples is a depiction of the eight main cardinal directions. Lempuyang Luhur Temple represents the east (purwa) and the color is white.

This direction is also associated with the realm of the Balinese god, Iswara.

When you walk to the top, you will see a number of temples, according to the path or route you are taking. There are 4 routes or routes to Lempuyang Luhur Temple. You can choose any route to get there.

1. The first route or the popular route is from Purwayu Village where on this route there is also the Penataran Agung Lempuyang temple which is one of the popular tourist attractions in the Karangasem area which is also known as “the Gate of Heaven” because of the beautiful natural scenery of the temple .

After the Penataran Agung Lempuyang temple, the Telaga Mas temple, and from the Telaga Mas temple you will climb about 1,750 steps, then you will see the Pasar Agung Lempuyang Temple, the last one is the Lempuyang Luhur Temple.

2. Other road access can also be from Br. Batu Gunung, Bukit Village passing Angrekasari Temple, passing Tirta Suniamerta location, then Tirta Jagasatru, Tirta Manik Ambengan, meeting Penataran Silawana Hyangsari Temple, Tirta Sudamala, Tirta Empul, Windusari Temple, Pasar Agung Temple and finally Lempuyang Luhur Temple.

 

3. The next access or the third route is through Banjar Gamongan, past Lempuyang Madya Temple, continues up to Telaga Sawang Temple, Pasar Agung Temple and then Lempuyang Luhur Temple.

4. Access to the 4th road can be through Banjar Jumenang, Bukit village, Karangasem past Penataran Kenusut Temple, Pasar Agung Temple (pengawangan) and up to Lempuyang Luhur.

2. It is not allowed to take children who are breastfeeding or who have not lost their teeth.
3. It is forbidden to wear gold jewelry.
4. Do not speak rudely, be rude and say “tired” or “tired”.
5. Prohibition for those who are menstruating and cuntaka (a family has died).
6. Abstinence from bringing pork.

Lempuyang Temple has a good spot or place to take pictures at sunset and sunrise. if you want to melukat or pray, or just visit the temple which is located at the top of Mount Lempuyang. you have to climb the stairs which is quite a lot, namely a number of 1,700 stairs.

If the weather is sunny, you can see the beautiful view of Mount Agung. During the eruption of Mount Agung, the Gate of Lempuyang Luhur Temple was widely used as a location to capture the eruption of Mount Agung there.

The distance from Lempuyang Luhur Temple to Mount Agung is about 19 kilometers. From Denpasar to Lempuyang Luhur Temple, you can take a two-hour drive.

Every tourist who enters the temple area must use a cloth or sarong (Kamen and Saput).
This is done so that the sanctity of the temple is maintained. For tourists who do not bring cloth or sarongs, they can rent them at a rental place close to the temple.
