Short history of “Tirta Gangga Water Garden”
In the 16th to 17th centuries, the Karangasem region was under the rule of the Gelgel Kingdom, led by I Dewa Karangamla, who resided in Selagumi (Balepunduk).
Tirta Gangga, once a royal water park, was established by Raja Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem Agung, in 1946. The name “Tirta Gangga” combines “Tirta,” meaning holy water, and “Ganga,” referencing the sacred river in India. This name reflects the belief that the park’s water is blessed, similar to that of the Ganges River, honoring Hindu tradition.
The park covers 1.2 hectares of land, stretching from east to west across the rice fields. It features three main structures: statues, ponds, and garden areas, each carrying significant meaning.
Tirta Gangga is located at the foot of Mount Agung, where the cool, serene environment creates a peaceful retreat for visitors. The tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal place to unwind and escape from the stresses of daily life.
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by statues arranged in soldier-like formations. A stone path leads across the pond, allowing tourists to walk on the water’s surface, providing the perfect spot for a selfie with the statues in the background.
Nearby, a 10-meter high water tower, shaped like a temple roof, dominates the park. The water in the Tirta Gangga pond comes from a sacred spring, considered holy by the local community and used in traditional ceremonies.
In addition to the holy water pond, there is also a pool for tourists. To swim here, visitors pay a fee to enter the site. The pool is filled with crystal-clear spring water. There are separate sections for children and adults, ensuring a safe experience for all. Be sure to bring towels and a change of clothes for after your swim.
After enjoying a swim and taking in the natural beauty of Tirta Gangga Water Garden, visitors can indulge in a variety of dishes at the restaurant located on the upper level. Souvenirs and keepsakes are also available at the gift shop, providing a perfect way to remember your visit.
