In Pegulingan Temple, there is an archeological site which is one of the proofs of the development of Buddhism in the era of Ancient Bali around the 8th century AD. This is supported by the discovery of the Dyani Buddha Aksobya Buddha Statues. Several clay sheets in the Sanskrit language, stored in a Buddhist statue stupa known as “Ye-Te” which one of them reads:
“Ye Dharma Hetu-prabhawa
Hentu tesantathagoto hyawadat
Tesab ca yo nirodka
Evam wadi mahasra manah” (Goris, 1948)
Meaning:
“The Buddha (tathagata) said thus that the Dharma is the cause of all events and the cause of destruction and suffering. That is the teaching of the Maha Hermit “(BP3 Bali Source page 20 Pegulingan Temple, Tirta Empul, Goa Gajah).
In addition to the aforementioned discoveries, a Structure of a Padas Stone, a flat box face box found down near the foot of the temple. And a bowl containing gold and silver plates. A square shape, a small stupa made of solid rock found in the center of the temple. Inside this stupa chamber, a Buddhist statue is made of gold.
The existence of archeological relics of Buddhism in Pegulingan Temple shows that the spread of Buddhism has existed since the 8th century. And still well preserved by the surrounding community which majority embraces Hinduism.
This proves harmony and mutual tolerance between the two religions that we have inherited to date, where at every religious celebration, both Buddhist and Hindu / Ciwa priests come together to deliver worship.
