Mengening

Mengening Temple was first discovered by W. F. Stutterheim between 1925 and 1927, although it was not detailed at that time. Later, in 1960, Bernet Kempers reported the existence of a temple with remnants of the structure located on the top of a small hill.

Mengening

According to the report, excavation and research revealed the temple in an incomplete state, along with a Yoni phallus located in the temple hall, which is considered sacred by the local community.

The temple is situated in the Pakerisan River valley, an area rich in water sources. The water is collected in a pond and flows through a shower. The Pancoran at Pura Mengening is used for both religious ceremonies and agricultural irrigation, with the water channeled through the Pakerisan River.

This site is very interesting to visit; in addition to exploring the relics of ancient kings, you can also admire the beautiful river. The river’s water is used to irrigate the surrounding rice fields and extends to the Pejeng and Bedulu areas.

Near Mengening Temple, you’ll find Tirta Empul Temple. To the south, there is also Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring Temple. While you need to take the main road to reach it, it’s not far from Mengening Temple. The best itinerary for visiting these sites is to start at Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring, then head to Mengening Temple, and finally visit Tirta Empul Temple. After your journey, you can relax and enjoy a local meal around the Tirta Empul Temple parking area.

They initially charge you the price of the entrance (30,000 rupees) and later, without prior notice, the price of the sarong, the lockers to leave your belongings while they do the purification ritual, a bracelet and some flowers. At the end of the purification ritual, they asked us for another 150,000 rupees per head without leaving you any option, after having already paid almost 100,000 rupees per head for all of the above.Beautiful temple but they must notify you in advance of the price of everything.

This was our first time to go to Pura Mengening, usually we went to Tirta Empul, which is located next to Mengening. We went to Pura Mengening to do “melukat” / cleansing our spirit, heart, body and soul. Nice place and clean.

Visiting here was one of the highlights of our honeymoon in Bali. This gorgeous temple, nestled in nature, and with flowing streams of natural water, was a marvel. Far faaaar quieter than its neighbouring tourist trap, Tirta, we had the whole place almost to ourselves and during high season mid August. We could do the water purification ceremony in peace.Changing facilities available.

I was sleepy as hell when I came to this temple, thus could not take proper pictures and enjoy any water purification rituals. However, from my faded impression I could see this is a big complex. The guys at the water pools said I need to go from one pool to another, then take a shower at the third pool. However it is all optional some guys jumped straight to the third pool for a wash then walked out. Some only did one pool and stayed there to chill. I was so faded and also did not bring a towel so I opted out. There is a big water temple with the bayan tree for offerings and a higher temple for praying. All are allowed as long as you bring offerings and praying.I think I will come back as I missed out the water purification. Ticket is 30k and It is local and nice. The holy water fountains here are super strong, makes it look very satisfying yet the vibe is like a social bathhouse afterwards. It is definitely a kind of holy local bathhouse as people come in and out with their towels all the time.

Beautiful, less busy, and even nicer than Tirta Empul if you must choose between them. The water prayer is very immersive and peaceful and takes maybe 20+ minutes when not busy.About 30000 cash to enter per person.

A green water oasis with 12 different holy waters. There's the option to do the "purification" procedure.. It takes like 15min. They provide orange rental sarong but it's recommended to bring swim wear. Much less crowded than the close by "Julia Roberts" temple
