French Press Coffee

The French press, also known as a press pot, plunger pot, or cafetière, is a popular method of brewing coffee that produces a rich and flavorful cup. It consists of a cylindrical glass or stainless steel carafe, a plunger with a metal or nylon mesh filter, and a lid. The French press is a simple and easy way to brew coffee, and it’s perfect for those who enjoy a full-bodied, rich taste.

History of the French Press

The French press was invented by a Frenchman named Attilio Calimani in 1929. He called it a cafetière à piston, or piston coffee maker. The design was later improved upon by an Italian designer named Faliero Bondanini, who added the metal or nylon mesh filter. The French press became popular in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, and it was later introduced to the United States in the 1980s.

How to Use a French Press

Using a French press is easy, and it only takes a few minutes to brew a delicious cup of coffee. Here are the steps:

  1. Boil Water: Start by boiling water in a kettle or a pot. The ideal temperature is around 200-205°F (93-96°C).
  2. Grind Coffee: While the water is boiling, grind your coffee beans. The ideal grind for a French press is a coarse grind, similar to sea salt.
  3. Add Coffee to the French Press: Once the water is boiled, add coffee grounds to the French press. The general rule of thumb is to use one tablespoon of coffee for every 4 ounces of water. For example, if you want to make 16 ounces of coffee, use 4 tablespoons of coffee grounds.
  4. Add Water: Pour hot water into the French press, making sure to saturate all the coffee grounds. Fill the French press to about an inch from the top.
  5. Stir: Use a spoon to stir the coffee and water mixture, making sure all the coffee grounds are fully submerged.
  6. Steep: Place the lid on the French press and let the coffee steep for 4-5 minutes.
  7. Press: After 4-5 minutes, press the plunger down slowly, making sure to apply even pressure. The plunger will separate the coffee grounds from the liquid.
  8. Serve: Pour the coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy!
